Join in and identify with growth and change
The city of Wortham is privileged to have the opportunity for a city park with the possibility of grant money making this energized challenge possible.
A town of this size and what it is able to accomplish is no stronger then its civic community and interested citizens willing to contribute their time and become part of this movement for change.
The "B" board of the Wortham Economic Development Council has initiated preliminary steps to undertake a city park project endeavor. But this needs to be a community based project, the results of which would benefit the entire community and the makeover would dramatically improve the appearance of our present park.
The location is across from the Elementary School where the old park is now located.
The current plan for the park is a large pavilion with a concrete floor and a metal roof.
This pavilion could serve the community in a number of ways. It would give Wortham a place to hold community functions such as Easter Sunrise service and other holiday functions. Families could rent it for reunions, and any planned outdoor events. The school as well could use it to their advantage for outdoor events or other planned functions. The roof would serve as shelter in the event of rain.
A sand volley ball court is part of the plan for teens and young adults as well. A walking track is planned around the perimeter of the park. In addition the plans call for a small play area adjacent to the pavilion for the young ones. A gazebo is also in the plan where band concerts, weddings and other functions could be held.
Additionally the plan calls for covered picnic tables with built in game boards for checkers and the like.
A great deal of thought has gone into this plan and a large diagram may be seen located at City Hall or a smaller version directly below this message. However the residents of Wortham are encouraged to offer suggestions for improving on the initial plan.
The Texas Parks Dept. has available a 50-50 grant structure available for purposes of this nature.
This means that the community of Wortham needs to show that they can shoulder their 50% of this matching arrangement.
We presently have an aggressive energized Economic Development Corporation but we need concerned citizens willing to donate time or money to complete this worthy project. It could be driving nails, spreading sand, removing existing structures and actually getting involved. We need holes dug and shrubs planted as well.
Your help might be a donation, equipment, or merely rolling up your sleeves and pitching in.
For information on the park project call Judy Edwards at City Hall or Mary Meyers 765-3813 for additional information or your willingness to get involved.
