Lot’s of things happening this summer in the City of Wortham! We secured a $5000 grant from the Texas Workforce for a new building to house the inventory of the Water/Wastewater and Public Works departments. This project must be completed by June 23 and the foundation has been started. The weather has held us up a bit, but with the workers who have volunteered, we should finish it in plenty of time. We may even have a RIBBON CUTTING to announce the job finished! We’ll invite the Texas Workforce and the citizens of Wortham to attend! We’ll let you know.

The Park Board has been selected and will meet once a month to continue to put this project together. The members are Mary Meyers, Shirley Libhart, Joe Butcher, Norris Buchmeyer, and Johnny Rogers. We have been receiving money donations and encourage all citizens to volunteer their labor or services. Thank You! Please call Mary Meyers @ 765-3813.

The City Council and the City workers have tried hard to clean up our town. We are still working on removing the buildings that are in disrepair and are dangerous to the health and safety of our citizens. We have contacted the owners of various properties to either remove the structure or repair it. This takes time as there are many legal steps to go through. However, we are gaining on it! With the clean-up in mind, the City Council has added the following to the PLACEMENT OF BINS, CONTAINERS, BAGS AND BUNDLES FOR COLLECTION: After collection of services, all bins and containers shall be removed from curbside within 24 hours and place bin an inconspicuous area until the next cycle of collection. It doesn’t have a good impression on people who drive through town, or plan to move here to see trash on our streets. Please be a responsible property owner and keep your trash picked up. Let’s keep Wortham beautiful!

The City election is May 10 and we have 4 citizens running for 3 vacancies. These concerned citizens are Scott Batts, Cliff NeSmith, Frank McClellan, and Albert Hall. There are many issues to be addressed, including our street repair, drainage system repair, water line and sewer line repair and our water supply. We have also had several people who want to move into the Wortham area and are expressing a desire to get water from the City. All these issues and more will come before the City Council. Please give careful consideration to your vote.

The City is getting a new WEB SITE! Allen Meyers has volunteered his talent and has been working on it for several weeks. He has interviewed many and dug up the varied history of Wortham. It also includes current news and the City "happenings." The address will be announced later. If anyone has information or pictures of Wortham’s past, please get in touch with Allen, 765-3813. This will be an exciting new addition to Wortham....past and present!!

Have you noticed the clean-up at our Welcome sign? Thank you, Shirley Libhart! They plan to plant trees and place benches also. This is a great improvement.

A couple of Springtime hints:

When to Weed: Timing can be a great help in your war against the weeds. Wait for a hot, sunny day; then hoe the weeds (without seed heads) in the morning and leave them lying on the surface of the soil. The sun will wither the weeds and transform them into beneficial organic mulch.

Weeds in Concrete: You can use piping-hot water to kill weeds that sprout through concrete joints–without endangering yourself or the wildlife. Boil water in a kettle and pour it into the cracks and watch the weeds wilt. If you have a lot of weeds, use a large soup pot, but be careful not to splash the hot water on yourself.

City Hall will be closed for the following holidays: Memorial Day Monday May 26, and Independence Day Friday July 4.
